How to choose practice management software as an Indian advocate
11 October 2026 · April AI team

Many practice management tools are built for American or British firms, with time sheets and trust accounts at the centre. Indian practice is different: hearing dates drive the week, eCourts holds the record, and clients expect updates on WhatsApp. Here is what to check before you choose.
Clients and intake
- Can you record a client as a person or a company, with ID and address proofs?
- Can you track consultations and follow-ups, with reminders?
- Can you mark a client as a consultation, a potential matter or an existing client?
This is the legal CRM part, and it is where new work comes from.
Cases and hearings
- Does each case hold court, bench, judge, case type, parties and opposing counsel?
- Can you see cases by stage on a board?
- Are hearing dates on a calendar the whole firm shares?
eCourts tracking
This is the most important question for Indian litigation. Can you enter a CNR number and have the software fetch the case record, hearing history and orders? Does it check again after each hearing and tell you what changed? Manual date entry is where most missed dates come from.
Documents
Can you keep pleadings, orders, client documents and drafts inside each case, and find them quickly? Are court orders kept apart from your own drafts?
The firm
- Can you assign a lead lawyer and a team to each case?
- Are there roles with permissions, so a clerk doesn't see billing and an intern doesn't see every client?
AI that helps, safely
AI can summarise a long case file, draft a notice or review a contract. Check that it works inside the matter (so it has the facts) and that your data isn't used to train public models. Always verify AI output before relying on it.
Security and confidentiality
Client files are privileged. Ask where the data is stored, whether downloads of ID documents are logged, and whether the vendor's staff can read your files.
Price and fit
Check the price per lawyer, whether eCourts look-ups cost extra, and whether there is a free plan to try with real cases. Try it with your clerk, not just yourself.
